Print receipt

A module about paper. Not about selling, not about fiscalisation, not about accounting — about how the strip coming out of the receipt printer looks, and the label stuck on a box, and which device prints them.

It sounds like a detail until you meet it: a receipt without the company name, a label without a barcode or a silent printer in the warehouse stop the work just as reliably as an error in the postings. So the template and the device are separate objects here, set up once.

The route: from template to paper

Template: sales order receipt · item label

Labels Defaults — which form to use without asking every time
        ↓
Print queue → printers (the device collects itself)

Clear print queue — if something is stuck
  1. Sales orders receipts — the till receipt template: plain text woven with printer commands in curly braces and field words the system replaces with the document's data.
  2. Items labels — label templates: what gets printed on an item's or a box's sticker at goods receipt.
  3. Labels Defaults — two settings that spare you the daily choice of a form.
  4. Print Receipt Settings — the workstation's name and the printer installed on it. Without them printing a receipt from the order does not start, but the receipt itself still goes to the print queue: the system does not put the workstation or the printer into the job.
  5. Print queue and printers — the second path: the system puts a job in the queue and the device, with its own key, collects it.
  6. Clear print queue — throw out whatever is stuck.

What is worth understanding

There are two printing paths: the queue and a PDF. An order receipt and a label made from an item labels template (in a goods receipt — the "Print Labels (Printer)" action) land in the print queue, and the device (or an agent beside it) periodically asks the system "is there anything to print for me?" — this is what the printers reference exists for. Printing by the labels print setting produces a PDF in a browser tab, bypassing the queue: in a goods receipt this is the "Printing Labels" action, and in an item card — when a print form is chosen in that setting. The PDF is printed on the computer's ordinary printer. There is no printing straight to the printer named in "Print Receipt Settings".

An empty queue is a good queue. The print queue works like a mailbox: the printer collects a job and deletes it. So a non-empty queue almost always means the device is not collecting — not that the system failed to print.

POS prints differently. The till builds its receipt itself and prints it through the till computer's browser — it uses neither this module's templates nor the printers reference. If a receipt did not come out of the till, look in POS, not here.

A template is text, not a designer. Printer commands and field substitutions live side by side in it; a mistake in the braces produces not "bad layout" but a strip of gibberish. Edit templates in small steps, printing after each one.

Label printing is launched from documents. A label-printing action is in the goods receipt ("Printing Labels", and next to it "Print Labels (Printer)"), in the item card ("Print Labels") and in the service order ("Printing Labels"). The template for the print queue (goods receipt and item) comes from Labels Defaults, the look of the PDF from the Labels Print Setting; the service order prints a PDF only.

Where to start in a new database

  1. Sales orders receipts — the receipt template for your printer and your company details.
  2. Items labels — the sticker templates.
  3. Labels Defaults — assign the forms so nobody has to choose.
  4. Print Receipt Settings — without it printing a receipt from the order does not start; printers — the devices that collect jobs from the queue.
  5. Print the first receipt and the first label — and fix the templates against reality.
